Mid-Week Magic: Community, Curls, and Catch-ups

There are some days that just feel like a deep, restorative exhale. Today was one of them—a perfect blend of professional community and personal connection that reminded me why I’m exactly where I need to be.
Finding "Home" at Work

My morning kicked off at 12:00 PM with our company’s Beauty and More Social Club. It’s hard to put into words what this community is like, but the people I work with truly make the office feel like a home.
In a season where I’ve dealt with some heavy friend group blowups, having this consistent, encouraging circle has been everything. Sitting with my coworkers and our Vice President, bonding over natural hair and skincare, I realized that while some personal bridges may have burned, I’ve gained a whole village at work that constantly pours into me. That kind of "Black Woman Magic" is the ultimate safety net.

The DC Walk & The Corporate Girlie Uniform
After the meeting, I headed into the city to meet Diana at 1:30 PM. We started at Coffee Republic (13th & G) and took the long way to Penn Quarter.
Diana and I have always bonded over long walks. Our very first walk was to Franklin Park (13th & I), and today’s stroll through the city (down 13th to H Street) felt like a tribute to those summer days when she worked in the office.

Walking into Maman, you could immediately tell we were among our peers. The "DC Corporate Girlie" uniform was in full effect: high-waisted, wide-leg black slacks, neat belts, layered necklaces, and modest earrings. Everyone had their laptops out, barcodes visible, working through lunch, but refusing to sacrifice the aesthetic. It’s a vibe only DC can pull off—professional, polished, and always in a pair of loafers (though I’m currently on the hunt for a new pair from Aldo because mine are definitely more "fashion" than "function" right now!).

Age Ain't Nothing But a Number
One thing I love about my friendship with Diana is the mutual respect. She’s younger than me, but she’s been an auditor longer and is incredibly mature. She’s always offered those "pro-tips" and pointers to keep me on track in my career. It’s a perfect example of how age doesn't define the value of a mentor or a friend.
Catching Up and Clearing the Air
Over a beautiful lunch, we got into the "real" talk. I gave her the update on the friend group drama and the "big blowup." It felt so good to vent to a mature, outside perspective and realize how much peace I’ve found since the dust settled.
The Spread at Maman

The Spread at Maman
We settled in at Maman to enjoy their seasonal offerings, and the drinks were just as curated as our conversation:
• The Sips: I went for the Martha Stewart Cherry Elderflower Spritz—a limited edition mix of morello cherry, lime, and fragrant elderflower that felt like spring in a glass. Diana chose the Strawberry Basil Lemonade, which looked vibrant and tasted like the perfect transition into the warmer months.

• The Savories: A classic club sandwich and a smoked salmon tartine.
• The Signature Sweets: We couldn't resist the Martha Stewart Milk Chocolate Crème Brûlée Sugar Bun and Martha Stewart's ultimate kitchen sink cookie.

A Sweet Souvenir

I couldn’t leave all that goodness behind at the cafe! Before we headed out, I made sure to grab a few treats to go for the kids. I packed up a Nutella Beignet (those chocolate pearls are such a hit!) and a decadent Nutella Brownie to take home.
There’s nothing like walking through the door after a long DC day and having a little "Maman magic" to share with my family. It was the perfect end to a day that started with community and ended with a sweet reminder of home.
Today was a reminder that when your "circle" shifts, your "community" expands.
