The "If You Know, You Know" List: Southern MD Gems You Need to Visit

Updated: Apr 6

Between the forensic accounting Master’s program, leading audits, and keeping up with a 13 and 11-year-old, my life is a lot of things—but "boring" isn't one of them. One thing I’ve learned in my 40s is that when you find a place that serves up great food and even better energy, you hold onto it.

I recently shared my personal "hidden gems" list with a mentor at work, and it reminded me why I started this blog. We all need those spaces where we can just be. Whether it’s a date night with Frank or a quick escape from the spreadsheets, these are the Southern Maryland spots that have my heart:

The Morning Spark

You know that spot near the Lowe’s in La Plata? The Breakfast Shoppe. It is the absolute best way to kick off a Saturday. There’s something about a local breakfast place that just feels like home, especially when life gets hectic.

The Heavy Hitters

If you haven't been to The Charles, start there. It’s the blueprint. If you’re looking for a steak that actually hits the spot, head to The Prime Street Grille in White Plains. And for the days you want something authentic and flavorful, Mexico Restaurant is my absolute favorite.

The Reliable Favorites

In La Plata and Waldorf, Galazio and Il Gusto are the ones I trust. They’re consistent, they’re welcoming, and they just get it right every single time.

The Destination Spots

If you feel like taking a little drive, Leonardtown has Sweetbay and The Front Porch. They have that elevated, soulful feel that I just love. And of course, for the full Maryland experience, you have to hit Captain Billy’s in Newburg.

These aren't just restaurants to me; they're the places where I get to recharge so I can keep showing up as my best self.
